Marie’s diverse experience in grades K-8 and reflective nature bring much to the students and teachers with whom she works. Marie received her B.S. in Elementary Education from Loyola University and her M. Ed. in Gifted Education from Belmont University. She has worked in parochial, private and public schools in Maryland, Tennessee, Missouri and Florida as a classroom teacher, resource teacher and an organizer of children’s reading and writing clubs.
Working in a Gold Star School for many years, Marie understands how to collaborate with others to establish strong classroom communities based in the best practices of teaching. Understanding what balanced literacy encompasses, creating meaningful differentiated curriculum and implementing the reading and writing workshops have all been areas in which Marie has experienced success with students and teachers.
Since 2004, Marie has worked as a consultant for the nonprofit organization Teachers for a Better Belize which provides week long workshops for the teachers in the Toledo District of Belize. For the past three years, Marie has focused on effectively launching the Writer’s Workshop model and all the major and minor components needed to follow this model effectively. In addition, Marie and her North American peers worked side by side with lead Belizean teachers to help the Ministry of Education in Belize introduce their new Language Arts curriculum to the teachers of Toledo.
Marie thoroughly enjoys working with others to build and establish nurturing communities in which our children are able to discover themselves and build their unique identities through the joy of reading and writing.
